Designer: James B. Longacre Diameter: 15 mm Edge: Reeded Weight: 1.672 grams Fineness: .900 Net gold weight: .0483 oz. Mints: Charlotte, Dahlonega, Philadelphia, San Francisco
The design was modified in 1856 to strengthen the Indian Head portrait so that better struck coins could be produced. The coins circulated until the beginning of the Civil War, but were hoarded thereafter and the mintage was reduced starting in 1863. With the exception of 1873-1874, until production ended in 1889, the mintages were relatively low. Over 5 million Type 3 gold dollars were issued, and although several dates are scare, they are readily available overall.
