215 20STGREVFirst appeared in 1907 as the High Relief Roman Numeral date, often considered America's most beautiful circulating coin. As with the $10 Indian, this type was issued without the motto IN GOD WE TRUST in 1907 and 1908 and with the motto from 1908 until 1933. By the early 1920's gold coins were gradually replaced by Federal Reserve Banknotes, and many St. Gaudens $20's were shipped overseas as international payments. It is entirlely possible that many of the 70 million originally issued may stll still be stored in bank vaults worldwide.
