First appeared in 1907 as the High Relief Roman Numeral date, often considered America's most beautiful design created for circulation. As with the $10 Indian, this type was issued without the motto IN GOD WE TRUST in 1907 and 1908 and with the motto from 1908 until 1933. By the early 1920's gold coins were gradually replaced by Federal Reserve Banknotes, and many St. Gaudens $20's were shipped overseas as international payments. As a result many of the 70 million originally issued may still be sitting in bank vaults worldwide.
