The basic Coronet design, also appearing on the $2.5 and $10 Liberties, was in use through 1908. In 1866 Congress directed that the motto IN GOD WE TRUST be added to the reverse in a ribbon above the eagle. With over 60 million pieces issued these coins circulated widely. This is the only type of gold coin struck by all 7 U.S. Mints in operation at the time.
